At our Dental Implant Center serving Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, and surrounding areas, the #1 choice of our dentists and patients to replace missing teeth is dental implants.

In general, dental implants are preferred because:

  • they are the strongest solution for chewing
  • they look the most natural
  • they feel the most comfortable
  • they last the longest

So why doesn’t every patient with a missing tooth get a dental implant? Why do some of them still choose other solutions like bridges or dentures?

Because like every solution, dental implants do have some downsides.

Here are the 3 main downsides of dental implants.

1. Dental implants take a long time. Dental implants work so well because your bone naturally heals around them, making them very secure and long lasting. However, this healing process takes time. It usually takes around 3 to 4 months on average for the dental implant to heal and be ready for a new tooth on top.

So if you have a missing tooth and want a replacement by next week, you might need to choose another option. (Or talk to one of our dentists – we have lots of tricks for making things work!)

2. Dental implants are more expensive than most other options. Dental implants are a complex, multi-step treatment that requires high amounts of skill, expertise, and planning.

If you are looking for the cheapest way to replace your missing teeth, then dentures might be a better solution for you.

3. Dental implants won’t work for everybody. Dental implants are very successful, as long as we do them in the right situations. This means that your dentist needs to check things like how much space you have, how much bone you have, the shape of your bone, the condition of the neighbouring teeth, your bite, and your smile. If your dentist places a dental implant the wrong way, or in the wrong situation, then your teeth might end up with pain, discomfort, a strange bite, or an unnatural looking smile.
